Enjoy New York’s Christmas Markets

The most famous of the city’s Christmas markets takes place on Union Square, but it’s the one I like least. The mobs become impassable at prime times, and the stores tend toward the sort of crunchy homemade art I’d expect from people on a Yoga-and-pottery retreat.

The market inside Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central Terminal has more interesting stuff, as does the market at Bryant Park. They’re within four blocks of one another, so it’s easy to see them both, but if you have to choose one, choose Bryant Park. Christmas markets really should be outside, and this one sometimes has very odd entertainment, like this woman playing the accordion and singing — I’m not kidding here — the disco hit “I Will Survive”.
