Trash moved by vacuum tubes on Roosevelt Island

All 16 apartment buildings on the island are hooked up to a 35-year-old trash removal system that eliminates the need for standard trash collection. Debris can travel as fast as 60 mph through the little-known system, which is the subject of an exhibit at Gallery RIVA, 527 Main St., Roosevelt Island. Here’s a 10-minute film that explains the unique system, a demonstration project that was never duplicated.
